Description
Maol Chean-dearg in Highland Wester Ross rises snow covered above turquoise water, with dark rock ribs and rusty shore heather set against a clear blue sky of scattered early spring clouds.
Maol Chean-dearg takes its Gaelic name from a red sandstone summit above a lower band of pale quartzite. An approach from Coulags follows the glen past Coire Fionnaraich bothy before climbing towards the mountain. The route crosses quartzite scree on its way to the summit’s rougher upper rocks.
A rounded snowy crown occupies the centre above broad white slopes broken by dark rock bands. Turquoise water lies below the mountain, divided by a low rocky tongue with scattered green vegetation. Grey boulders rest among rust coloured shrubs along the near bank. Thin white reflections and bright cloud edges suggest a clear early spring day, with fresh snow still covering the high ground.
