Description
March in Cambridgeshire sets colourful riverside houses below a red brick clock tower, with moored narrowboats and leafy green banks beneath high cream clouds in bright summer afternoon light.
This Fenland market town occupies the navigable old course of the River Nene. Before drainage transformed the surrounding marshes, its settlement stood on an island of higher ground. River trade supported the early town, followed by the growth of a substantial railway centre during the nineteenth century.
March looks along a narrow reflective channel beside blue and cream houses and leafy green banks. A tall red brick clock tower with a slender green upper stage rises on the right. Narrowboats lie against the left towpath, beneath a repeated timber fence. Cream cloud banks and near white flowers suggest bright summer afternoon light between the riverside buildings.
