A portrait of Marguerite Gachet at the piano, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, featuring his characteristic rhythmic brushwork and decorative background.
Painted in June 1890 during his final months in Auvers-sur-Oise, this work depicts Marguerite Gachet, the daughter of Dr. Paul Gachet, who treated the artist. Van Gogh produced several portraits of the Gachet family during this period, often employing a distinct colour palette and rhythmic brushwork to convey a sense of quiet domesticity.
The composition focuses on Marguerite in profile, seated at an upright piano. Her white dress is rendered with thick, directional brushstrokes that follow the folds of the fabric, creating a sense of movement and texture. The piano itself is painted in darker, more solid tones, providing a visual anchor against the lighter figure.
The background features a wall covered in a patterned paper, executed in a stippled technique that flattens the pictorial space. This decorative approach reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which Van Gogh collected and studied throughout his career. The contrast between the vertical lines of the piano and the repetitive dots of the wallpaper creates a structured environment for the subject.
Van Gogh uses a palette dominated by greens, whites, and earthy browns. The light on the subject is soft, suggesting an interior setting illuminated by natural or ambient light. The painting captures a moment of concentration, with Marguerite's hands positioned on the keys. This work remains a clear example of the artist's late style, where he moved away from the more chaotic application of paint seen in his earlier works, opting instead for a more controlled and rhythmic method of mark-making. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel.
