A detailed engraving by Antonie Wierix (III) depicting the Virgin Mary as the Mater Dolorosa, based on a design by Maarten de Vos.
This engraving by Antonie Wierix (III) depicts the Virgin Mary as the Mater Dolorosa, or Mother of Sorrows. The composition follows a traditional iconographic format, showing Mary in a state of mourning, her hands clasped in prayer. A single sword pierces her chest, a visual reference to the prophecy of Simeon regarding the suffering she would endure. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the heavy folds of her garments and the subtle shading of her expression, which conveys a sense of quiet resignation.
The background features a radiating halo, suggesting a divine presence that contrasts with the earthly sorrow of the figure. The inclusion of Latin text at the base, 'O quam tristis et afflicta fuit illa benedicta mater Vnigeniti', translates to 'O how sad and afflicted was that blessed mother of the Only-begotten'. This inscription serves to guide the viewer through the devotional purpose of the print. The work is based on an invention by Maarten de Vos, as indicated by the inscription 'M. de Vos inuent' at the lower left, while Wierix's role as the engraver and publisher is noted by 'Ant. Wierx excud'.
Antonie Wierix (III) was part of a prominent family of engravers based in Antwerp. Their output was prolific, often focusing on religious and moralising subjects intended for a wide audience. This print reflects the technical precision characteristic of the Wierix workshop, where the medium of engraving was used to disseminate complex theological imagery. The balance between the linear clarity of the figure and the atmospheric quality of the light surrounding the halo demonstrates the technical skill applied to small-scale devotional prints during this period. The work remains a clear example of the intersection between artistic production and religious practice in the late sixteenth-century Low Countries.
