An etching by Pieter de Grebber depicts Mary and Joseph in a close, intimate pose. The etching technique creates a soft, atmospheric effect, with fine lines defining the figures and subtle shading adding depth.
This etching by Pieter de Grebber (1600-1652) depicts Mary and Joseph. De Grebber was a Dutch Golden Age painter. He produced history paintings, portraits, and also altarpieces for clandestine Catholic churches. His style shows the influence of Peter Paul Rubens and the Haarlem Mannerists. He was also influenced by the French classicism of Simon Vouet and Nicolas Poussin. De Grebber is known for his classicising tendencies. He was admired by both Gerard de Lairesse and Sir Peter Lely. The print shows Mary and Joseph in a close, intimate pose. Mary, veiled and draped in fabric, looks serenely to the left. Joseph, with a full beard, leans in towards her, his expression thoughtful. The etching technique creates a soft, atmospheric effect, with fine lines defining the figures and subtle shading adding depth. Light emanates from above, illuminating the pair and creating a sense of reverence. The composition is simple yet effective, focusing on the emotional connection between the two figures.
