A contemplative engraving by Pieter de Grebber portrays Mary Magdalene in a moment of reflection, with a crucifix in the background and a Latin inscription referencing her forgiveness.
This engraving by Pieter de Grebber (1600-1652), a Dutch Golden Age painter, depicts Mary Magdalene in a state of contemplation. De Grebber, known for his contributions to both Catholic and Protestant churches, often explored religious themes in his work. His style blends elements of classicism with the dramatic flair characteristic of the Baroque period. The print shows Mary Magdalene seated, her hands clasped in her lap, with a crucifix visible on a rocky outcrop behind her. The composition is rendered in fine lines, typical of engraving, creating a range of tonal values. The Latin inscription at the bottom translates to 'I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven, for she loved much' (Luke 7:47), a reference to Mary Magdalene's repentance and devotion. The overall effect is one of quiet reflection and spiritual intensity, inviting the viewer to consider themes of forgiveness and redemption.
