A delicate Baroque etching by Jan Miel, depicting the Virgin Mary with the infant Christ and John the Baptist in a serene, natural setting.
This etching by the Flemish artist Jan Miel depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and the infant John the Baptist. Miel, who spent a significant portion of his career in Rome, was known for his ability to blend Northern European sensibilities with the stylistic developments of the Italian Baroque. His work often captures a sense of intimacy and naturalism, moving away from the rigid formality found in earlier religious compositions.
The scene is set in a quiet, outdoor environment. Mary is seated on the ground, her form draped in heavy, flowing fabric that Miel renders with precise, rhythmic lines. The two children interact with one another in the foreground, their figures modelled with soft, rounded contours that contrast against the more angular folds of the drapery. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the figures. Miel uses a variety of hatching techniques to create depth and shadow, particularly in the darker areas behind the figures and the foliage to the left.
As a printmaker, Miel demonstrates a high level of technical control. The lines are clean and purposeful, defining the anatomy of the children and the gentle expression of the Virgin. This work reflects the broader interest among seventeenth-century artists in humanising religious subjects, placing them in settings that feel accessible rather than purely iconographic. The composition is balanced, with the triangular arrangement of the three figures providing a sense of stability. This print offers a clear view into the graphic style of a painter who was highly regarded for his genre scenes and religious works during his lifetime. It is a fine example of the etching medium used to convey both narrative warmth and formal precision.
