A portrait of Mary Stuart, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange, as a widow, painted by Bartholomeus van der Helst. She is depicted in a white satin gown, holding an orange, with a cityscape visible in the background.

This portrait by Bartholomeus van der Helst (1613-1670) depicts Mary Stuart, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange, as a widow. The painting shows her seated, holding an orange, a symbol of the House of Orange-Nassau. She is dressed in a shimmering white satin gown, accessorised with a pearl necklace and a jewelled brooch. Her dark hair is styled in loose curls around her face. The background features a dark curtain and, through an archway, a glimpse of a bustling cityscape, possibly The Hague. The composition is carefully arranged to convey both her status and her state of mourning. Van der Helst was a sought-after portrait painter in the Dutch Golden Age, known for his ability to capture the likeness and character of his sitters with great detail and skill. This work exemplifies his talent for rendering textures and fabrics, as seen in the luminous quality of Mary's gown and the rich colours of the oriental carpet beneath her feet. Mary Stuart (1631-1660) was the daughter of Charles I of England and Henrietta Maria of France. She married William II, Prince of Orange, in 1641, but he died in 1650, leaving her a widow at a young age. This portrait likely commemorates that period of her life.
