Camille Corot painted this study during his first sojourn in Italy, a period that proved formative for his approach to light and structure. The work captures the town of Marino, situated in the Alban Hills near Rome. Corot focused on the architectural massing of the buildings as they emerge from the rugged, rocky terrain. His application of paint is direct and economical, prioritising the tonal relationships between the shadowed stone structures and the sun-drenched slopes below.

The composition relies on the contrast between the verticality of the buildings and the receding horizontal lines of the surrounding hills. Corot utilised a muted palette, dominated by earth tones, ochres, and deep greens, to convey the specific atmosphere of the Italian countryside.
