Gustave Loiseau, a painter associated with the later generation of Impressionists, frequently travelled to the south of France to capture the unique light of the Mediterranean. This work depicts the town of Martigues, often referred to as the Venice of Provence due to its canals and waterways. Loiseau employs his characteristic cross-hatching technique, a method that creates a textured surface and allows for the layering of colours to represent the shifting atmosphere of the water and sky.

The composition focuses on the architectural forms of the buildings lining the canal, which are reflected in the water below. The palette consists of soft blues, ochres, and pale pinks, capturing the warmth of the southern sun. Unlike the earlier Impressionists who sought to capture the fleeting moment, Loiseau often worked in a more structured manner, applying paint in short, rhythmic strokes that unify the entire surface of the canvas. The buildings appear as solid masses, yet they are softened by the light and the ripples on the water surface.

Loiseau was a student at the École des Arts Décoratifs before joining the Académie Julian. His work maintains a connection to the traditions of Pissarro and Sisley, yet he developed a distinct visual language through his systematic application of paint. This piece provides a view of the quiet, everyday life of the port town, focusing on the interplay between the man-made structures and the natural elements of water and light. The absence of human figures allows the viewer to focus entirely on the colour relationships and the tactile quality of the paint application, which remains a hallmark of his mature period.
