A sixteenth-century oil painting by Portuguese Renaissance artist Gregorio Lopes, depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian.
Gregorio Lopes, a prominent figure in Portuguese Renaissance painting, produced this depiction of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian during the early sixteenth century. The composition follows the traditional hagiographic narrative, placing the saint at the centre, bound to a post while archers and crossbowmen prepare to execute their sentence.
The work demonstrates the influence of Northern European and Italian artistic currents on the Portuguese court. The architectural elements in the background, including the circular structure, suggest an awareness of classical forms, while the figures display the precise, linear handling characteristic of the period. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, with the pale, illuminated body of the saint providing a clear visual contrast to the darker, more active figures of the executioners.
Lopes was active in Lisbon and served the Portuguese royal court, which allowed him to integrate contemporary European styles into his work. This painting reflects the technical rigour of the era, with careful attention paid to the anatomy of the saint and the period-appropriate attire of the soldiers. The scene is set within a wide, open space, allowing for a clear view of the surrounding urban architecture. The artist balances the static, suffering figure of the saint with the dynamic, preparatory movements of the archers, creating a structured narrative flow across the panel. The work remains a representative example of the religious art produced in Portugal during the reign of King John III, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the time for detailed, narrative-driven compositions.
