The composition depicts the execution of Saint Placidus, Saint Flavia, and two other companions. Correggio organises the figures in a dynamic arrangement that draws the eye across the canvas, balancing the violent action with a sense of spiritual resignation.

The artist employs a sophisticated use of light and shadow, known as chiaroscuro, to model the forms of the figures. The drapery, particularly the heavy folds of the robes, demonstrates his ability to render texture and volume. The colour palette is composed of deep blues, ochres, and warm flesh tones, which contrast against the darker, atmospheric background.
