A refined nineteenth-century lithograph by Franz Hanfstaengl, depicting the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus and John the Baptist in a circular composition.
This lithograph by Franz Hanfstaengl reproduces a composition derived from the school of Raphael. Hanfstaengl was a German painter and lithographer who gained recognition for his technical precision in translating oil paintings into print media. His work often focused on the reproduction of Old Master paintings, making high-quality imagery accessible to a wider audience during the nineteenth century.
The image depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the infant Jesus and the young John the Baptist. The figures are arranged within a circular frame, a format that draws the eye toward the central interaction between the children. The infant Jesus reaches toward a small scroll held by John, a symbolic reference to the future ministry of Christ. The drapery of Mary's garments is rendered with soft transitions, demonstrating the tonal range achievable through the lithographic process. The background includes architectural elements and fabric folds, providing a sense of depth without distracting from the primary subjects.
Hanfstaengl’s approach to this print reflects the nineteenth-century interest in the Italian Renaissance. By employing a monochromatic palette, the artist emphasises the draughtsmanship and the sculptural quality of the figures. The print captures the serene expressions and the gentle physical connection between the mother and the children. This piece serves as an example of the high standards of reproductive printmaking in Munich during the mid-nineteenth century, where Hanfstaengl operated a successful lithographic establishment. The clarity of the lines and the balanced composition demonstrate his technical skill in capturing the nuances of the original painted source material.
