A detailed genre scene by Pietro Longhi depicting a masked social gathering in 18th-century Venice, capturing the customs and attire of the period.
Pietro Longhi, a Venetian painter, focused his career on documenting the daily life of the Venetian aristocracy during the eighteenth century. This work depicts a social gathering within a courtyard, a common setting for the leisure activities of the period. The figures are dressed in the traditional Venetian carnival attire, featuring the 'tabarro' cloak and the 'bauta' mask, which allowed for anonymity in public spaces.
Longhi captures a moment of quiet interaction. A central female figure, holding a small cup, sits amongst masked companions. To her left, an unmasked man in a light-coloured coat offers a tray, perhaps serving chocolate or coffee, which were popular social beverages of the time. The composition is structured by the architectural elements of the courtyard, with columns framing the scene and creating a sense of enclosure. The lighting is subdued, focusing attention on the textures of the silk garments and the porcelain vessels.
Unlike the grand historical or religious paintings of his contemporaries, Longhi chose to record the mundane habits of his social circle. His approach is observational, providing a window into the customs of Venice before the fall of the Republic. The painting avoids dramatic narrative, instead presenting a static, staged quality that reflects the performative nature of Venetian social life. The muted colour palette, dominated by greys, blacks, and soft pastels, aligns with the artist's preference for realism over idealisation. This piece is representative of the genre scenes that defined his output, offering a glimpse into the domestic and social rituals of the Venetian elite.
