A detailed 1538 engraving by German artist Heinrich Aldegrever, depicting a master of ceremonies in elaborate courtly dress accompanied by a dog.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever, dated 1538, depicts a figure identified as a master of ceremonies. Aldegrever was a member of the group known as the Little Masters, a collective of German printmakers who produced small-scale, highly detailed engravings. His work often reflects the influence of Albrecht Dürer, particularly in the precision of the line work and the careful observation of costume and texture.
The figure is shown in a dynamic pose, holding a staff aloft in his right hand while his left hand grips a cylindrical object. He wears an elaborate outfit, complete with a heavy chain, decorative medallions, and puffed sleeves. A dog stands beside him, looking upward toward the staff. The composition is contained within a clear, defined space, with the figure set against a simple ground. The hatching techniques used throughout the piece demonstrate the technical skill required for sixteenth-century copperplate engraving, where every shadow and fold of fabric is rendered through the density and direction of individual lines.
Aldegrever was based in Soest, Westphalia, and his output included a wide range of subjects, from mythological scenes to portraits of contemporary figures. This particular print is part of a series focusing on wedding dancers or courtly figures, a popular subject for the Little Masters. The attention to the material qualities of the clothing, such as the metallic sheen of the chain and the soft texture of the fur, provides a glimpse into the fashion and social hierarchies of the period. The print remains a clear example of the technical mastery achieved by German printmakers during the Reformation era, where the portability of such works allowed for the circulation of artistic styles across Europe.
