A striking Dadaist portrait by Francis Picabia, featuring a stylised face adorned with real matchsticks to create a unique, tactile texture.
Francis Picabia, a central figure in the Dada movement, created this work during his period of experimentation with non-traditional materials. The piece features a stylised, schematic portrait of a woman, where the hair is composed of actual matchsticks adhered to the canvas surface. This incorporation of everyday objects into fine art reflects the anti-art ethos of the Dadaists, who sought to disrupt conventional notions of aesthetic value and artistic production.
The composition is deliberately flat, prioritising a graphic, almost iconographic representation over anatomical accuracy. The face is rendered in simple, clean lines, while the matchsticks provide a tactile, repetitive texture that contrasts with the smooth, painted background. The use of matches, a mundane and disposable item, forces the viewer to reconsider the relationship between the object and the subject. By elevating a common household item to the status of art, Picabia questions the hierarchy of materials and the role of the artist as a creator of unique, precious objects.
This work belongs to a broader series of portraits from the mid-1920s, often characterised by their stark simplicity and use of collage elements. The muted blue-green background provides a neutral field that allows the geometric forms of the face and the linear arrangement of the matches to dominate the visual experience. It is a clear example of Picabia's restless creativity and his tendency to shift between styles, moving away from his earlier mechanical drawings toward a more playful, yet subversive, approach to portraiture. The work remains a curious artefact of the interwar period, capturing the experimental spirit of the European avant-garde.
