Description

A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Claes Jansz. Visscher (II) depicting the allegorical figure of Temperance, symbolising moderation and self-control.

This print by Claes Jansz. Visscher (II) depicts the personification of Temperance, or Matigheid, a classic virtue often represented in European art during the seventeenth century. The figure is shown pouring water from a pitcher into a small glass, a symbolic act of dilution that signifies moderation and self-control. Her posture is calm and composed, reflecting the moral weight of the virtue she embodies. The artist employs precise line work to define the folds of her drapery and the subtle textures of the vessel, demonstrating the technical skill common to Dutch printmakers of the period. In the background, a modest view of a river and distant hills provides a sense of space without distracting from the central figure. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Temperies rerum, Veneris, Bacchi, cibique, Arx vitae, et columen mentis, ego una vocor', translates to a declaration of her role as the guardian of life and the mind, moderating the excesses of love, wine, and food. This work belongs to a series of allegorical figures, a popular format for educational and moralising prints in the Netherlands during the Dutch Golden Age. Visscher, who was also a publisher and cartographer, produced many such works that circulated widely among collectors and scholars. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the figure contrasted against the horizontal lines of the landscape. The use of light and shadow, achieved through varied hatching techniques, gives the figure a sense of volume and presence. This print offers a clear view into the didactic nature of early modern Dutch art, where classical mythology and Christian virtues were frequently synthesised to provide guidance for daily conduct. It remains a fine example of the printmaking traditions that defined the visual culture of the era.
