A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting the serene islands of Matsushima Bay in the Oshu Province.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the famous Matsushima Bay, a collection of islands in the Oshu Province of Japan. The composition is part of the series 'Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces', a collection that documents the geography of Japan during the Edo period. Hiroshige employs a distinct colour palette, utilising the deep blue of the water to contrast with the muted greens of the pine-covered rock formations. The sky transitions from a dark purple at the top to a pale horizon, suggesting the light of dawn or dusk.
Several small boats navigate the calm waters between the islands, providing a sense of scale to the towering, jagged cliffs. The print features the characteristic uchiwa-e format, which was originally designed for use on a fan. This shape influences the composition, as the artist frames the scene within a rounded border, leaving space at the bottom for the handle. The inclusion of cartouches containing the series title and the artist's signature is typical of the period's printmaking conventions. Hiroshige captures the quiet atmosphere of the bay, focusing on the relationship between the natural rock structures and the surrounding sea. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clear outlines and layered colour application. It remains a representative example of the artist's ability to render geographical subjects with a sense of place and mood, reflecting the interest in travel and regional identity that permeated Japanese culture during the mid-nineteenth century.
