Description
Mauchline in East Ayrshire holds a close connection with Robert Burns, its sandstone streets and church tower belonging to a small inland town above the River Ayr countryside.
East of Ayr, Mauchline is closely associated with Robert Burns and Jean Armour. The poet lived and worked here during the productive years from 1784 to 1788. The town also became known for wooden Mauchline Ware and the red sandstone quarried nearby.
A narrow street curves between pale cottages and warm stone walls towards a tall red church tower. Pointed pinnacles rise above its battlements, with leafy trees surrounding the buildings and soft green hills beyond. Sunlight catches the rough masonry of the nearest gable, while deep shadows stretch across the road. Yellow green foliage suggests late summer or the first turn towards autumn.
