A detailed eighteenth-century engraving by Pierre Chenu depicting Maximilien de Bethune, Duc de Sully, in formal military attire.
This engraving by Pierre Chenu depicts Maximilien de Bethune, Duc de Sully, a figure of significant influence in French history. Chenu, an active engraver in the eighteenth century, produced this work based on an earlier painting by Frans Pourbus the Younger. The composition follows the conventions of formal portraiture from the period, presenting the subject within a simulated architectural frame that mimics a stone niche.
Sully is shown in half-length, wearing a ruff and armour, which denotes his role as a military leader and statesman. He holds a document, a common attribute in portraiture intended to signify the subject's administrative or intellectual contributions. The background features classical sculptural elements, including a figure holding a sword, which reinforces the martial theme of the portrait. The lower section of the print includes a plinth with an inscription identifying the sitter, his titles, and the provenance of the original painting.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision characteristic of French engraving during the Enlightenment. Chenu employs varied line weights and cross-hatching to define the textures of the armour, the softness of the ruff, and the contours of the face. The lighting is controlled, creating a sense of volume and gravity appropriate for a historical portrait. This print serves as a record of both the sitter's public identity and the aesthetic preferences of the era, where historical figures were frequently commemorated through reproductive printmaking. The work remains a clear example of the intersection between historical documentation and the craft of the copperplate engraver, providing a window into the visual culture of eighteenth-century France.
