Description
A Pre-Raphaelite portrait by Ford Madox Brown depicting a woman in a yellow dress holding hawthorn blossoms. This work features warm golden tones and detailed botanical elements.
Ford Madox Brown painted May Memories between 1869 and 1884. The work depicts a woman seated outdoors, framed by the dark foliage of a tree. She wears a yellow dress with a patterned shawl draped over her shoulder. In her hand, she holds a sprig of white hawthorn, a flower traditionally associated with the month of May and themes of hope or remembrance. The sitter is likely Marie Spartali Stillman, a frequent model for the Pre-Raphaelite circle. Brown used a warm, golden palette for the central figure, which contrasts with the deep browns and greens of the background. The application of paint is dense. He focused on the textures of the fabric and the specific botanical details of the blossoms. Brown was never a formal member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, but he shared their interest in naturalistic detail and literary themes. This painting reflects his later style, where the focus shifted toward more atmospheric and singular figure studies. The composition is tight, pressing the subject close to the picture plane. This creates a sense of intimacy. The lighting appears to filter through the canopy above, casting soft shadows across her face and garments.

Artist Biography
Ford Madox Brown
He was born in Calais in 1821, trained across Europe, and settled in London. Though never an official member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, he was their most important older ally and the teacher who most shaped their ambitions. His insistence on painting outdoors in natural light, often to the point of physical discomfort, and his dense, moralising compositions made him a bridge between the Nazarenes he had studied with in Rome and the young English radicals who followed.
He also designed stained glass and furniture for Morris and Co. He died in 1893, at seventy-two.
