Dante Gabriel Rossetti's *The Girlhood of Mary Virgin* (1848-1849) depicts the young Virgin Mary embroidering, watched over by Saint Anne and an angel, in a scene filled with Pre-Raphaelite symbolism.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti's painting, *The Girlhood of Mary Virgin*, completed between 1848 and 1849, presents a scene of domesticity imbued with religious symbolism. Rossetti, a founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, aimed to revive the artistic styles and values of pre-Renaissance art. This work exemplifies the Brotherhood's attention to detail, symbolic representation, and moral themes. The painting depicts the Virgin Mary as a young girl, seated and embroidering a lily, a symbol of purity, under the watchful eye of her mother, Saint Anne. An angel, identifiable by its pink wings, stands to the left, tending to a lily plant. In the background, Joachim prunes a vine. The scene is filled with symbolic objects: a dove representing the Holy Spirit, books symbolising virtues, and discarded thorns alluding to Christ's future suffering. The composition is carefully arranged, with each element contributing to the overall narrative of Mary's virtuous upbringing and foreshadowing her future role.
