A tranquil pastoral scene by Alfred Parsons, *Meadows by the Avon* depicts women walking along a path beside the River Avon, with grazing animals in the distance. The painting's muted palette and gentle brushwork evoke a sense of peace and harmony.
Alfred Parsons (1847-1920) was a British artist, known primarily for his idyllic English garden and rural views. He trained at the Government School of Art, South Kensington, and gained recognition as an illustrator for periodicals such as *The Graphic* before focusing on watercolour and oil painting. Parsons's style is characterised by its attention to botanical detail and atmospheric effects, often depicting scenes of the English countryside. He collaborated with Edwin Austin Abbey on illustrations for Shakespeare's plays and poems, further cementing his reputation as a versatile artist. Parsons was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1897 and Royal Academician in 1911. He also wrote and illustrated books on garden design and the English countryside. *Meadows by the Avon* captures a serene pastoral scene. The composition features a group of women, possibly farmworkers, walking along a path beside the River Avon. Cattle and sheep graze in the distance, adding to the tranquil atmosphere. The trees, rendered in autumnal hues, frame the scene, while the river reflects the soft light of the sky. The painting's muted palette and gentle brushwork evoke a sense of peace and harmony, typical of Parsons's work.
