A dynamic oil painting by Charles M. Russell depicting a traditional buffalo hunt on the American Great Plains.
Charles M. Russell, often referred to as the Cowboy Artist, produced this work in 1905. The painting depicts a traditional buffalo hunt, a subject that occupied much of his career. Russell lived among the Piegan Blackfeet for a period in his youth, and this experience informed his detailed observations of Indigenous life and the American West.
The composition captures a moment of high tension. A rider on a spotted horse leans forward, preparing to strike a large bison. The motion is frozen in a dynamic arc, with the horse and rider positioned to the right, while the massive form of the bison dominates the left foreground. Russell uses a palette of earthy ochres, browns, and muted sky tones to ground the scene in the rugged terrain of the Great Plains.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who romanticised the frontier from a distance, Russell maintained a focus on the physical reality of the hunt. The musculature of the bison and the strained posture of the horse convey the physical exertion required for such an encounter. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the hunter and the animal. This work reflects Russell's technical skill in oil painting, particularly his ability to render animal anatomy and the specific light conditions of the American West. His work remains a primary visual record of the period, documenting the customs and environment of the region before the rapid changes of the early twentieth century.
