A minimalist Zenga ink painting by Enji Torei, depicting the meditative form of Bodhidharma through a single, fluid brushstroke.
This work by the Zen monk Enji Torei presents a minimalist depiction of Bodhidharma, the semi-legendary founder of Zen Buddhism. In the Zenga tradition, artists often employed extreme economy of line to communicate spiritual concepts. Here, the figure of Daruma is reduced to a single, continuous, sweeping brushstroke that defines his seated, robed form. This abstraction removes all superfluous detail, focusing instead on the essence of the meditative state.
The composition balances the heavy, fluid ink of the figure against the vertical columns of Japanese calligraphy on the left. The text serves as a companion to the visual form, grounding the abstraction in the intellectual and spiritual framework of Zen practice. The paper shows a natural, aged tone, which provides a neutral background for the stark black ink. The presence of red seal impressions adds a subtle point of colour, a common feature in traditional East Asian ink paintings.
Enji Torei was a student of Hakuin Ekaku, and his work reflects the direct, unadorned approach characteristic of the Rinzai school of Zen. By stripping away the representational elements of the human form, the artist invites the viewer to engage with the work through intuition rather than literal interpretation. The brushwork displays a controlled energy, showing the physical movement of the artist at the moment of creation. This piece is an example of how ink painting functions as a record of a meditative act, where the spontaneity of the stroke is as important as the subject itself. The work is presented with decorative borders, typical of traditional mounting styles for hanging scrolls, which frame the central image while maintaining the focus on the ink work.
