He was a key member of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München (New Artists' Association of Munich), and later, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group of expressionist artists founded by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. Jawlensky's work is characterised by bold colours and simplified forms, reflecting his interest in spirituality and the inner life. 'Meditation' exemplifies Jawlensky's mature style. The painting presents an abstracted face rendered in broad, vertical strokes of colour. Dominant hues of red, purple, and black create a somber, contemplative mood.
