Meeting with a Friend on an Autumn Day is a hanging scroll by the Japanese artist Noro Kaiseki. Kaiseki was a prominent figure in the Bunjinga movement, which drew inspiration from the ideals of Chinese scholar-painters. This work reflects the movement's focus on personal expression and the appreciation of nature as a retreat from worldly concerns.
The composition features towering, rounded mountain peaks that dominate the upper portion of the silk surface. Below, a winding path leads through a forest of trees, guiding the eye toward small, secluded dwellings. The brushwork is deliberate and controlled, using ink washes to suggest the texture of the rock formations and the foliage of the trees. Subtle touches of autumn colour appear in the leaves, providing a seasonal context to the scene. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper right corner is a hallmark of the literati tradition, where the artist's poetic inscription complements the visual imagery.
