A preparatory study for the mural cycle at Saint-Germain-des-Prés, depicting the biblical meeting of Melchizedek and Abraham in a refined Neoclassical style.
This work is a preparatory study by Hippolyte Jean Flandrin for his monumental mural cycle within the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris. Flandrin, a pupil of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, maintained the rigorous draughtsmanship and clarity of form associated with the French Neoclassical tradition. The scene depicts the biblical encounter between Melchizedek and Abraham, a subject chosen for its theological weight and its suitability for the architectural constraints of the church interior.
The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged in a frieze-like manner that echoes the aesthetic of ancient relief sculpture. Melchizedek, positioned on the left, is draped in white robes, his arm extended in a gesture of benediction. Opposite him stands Abraham, clad in a red mantle, accompanied by his retinue of soldiers. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical precision and controlled gesture, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation to ensure the narrative remains legible from a distance.
Flandrin utilised a clear, bright palette, particularly in the treatment of the sky and the drapery, which provides a sense of atmospheric depth despite the relatively shallow pictorial space. The inclusion of the vessels and bread at the centre of the composition serves to anchor the interaction, grounding the spiritual event in tangible, earthly elements. This study demonstrates the artist's methodical approach to large-scale decorative commissions, where every figure and fold of fabric was carefully considered before being transferred to the wall. The work reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in reviving Christian iconography through a classical lens, prioritising order, harmony, and structural integrity over the emotional turbulence found in contemporary Romantic painting.
