A traditional Japanese woodblock print commemorating the kabuki actor Nakamura Tamashichi, featuring symbolic lotus imagery and prayer beads.
This woodblock print, known as a shini-e or death portrait, commemorates the passing of the kabuki actor Nakamura Tamashichi. Produced in 1860, the work follows the conventions of the genre, which served to inform fans of an actor's death and provide a final image for remembrance. The artist, Enjaku, captures the subject in a contemplative state, removed from the high energy of the stage.
The actor is depicted in a bust-length composition against a dark, atmospheric background. He holds a strand of prayer beads, a common motif in Buddhist-influenced memorial art, suggesting a transition to the afterlife. Before him, a single lotus flower rises, a symbol of purity and rebirth in Japanese iconography. His expression is calm, with the characteristic white makeup of the kabuki performer rendered with clean, precise lines. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted blues and soft pinks to maintain a sombre, respectful mood.
Enjaku, active in the mid-nineteenth century, was known for his contributions to the Osaka school of printmaking. Unlike the more commercialised prints of Edo, the Kamigata prints often favoured a more realistic approach to the actor's features. This print includes calligraphic inscriptions that provide details of the actor's death, including the date and his posthumous Buddhist name. The composition is balanced, using the verticality of the text and the curve of the lotus stem to guide the viewer's eye across the frame. This piece offers a window into the specific cultural practices surrounding the kabuki theatre in the late Edo period, where the lives and deaths of performers were closely followed by a dedicated public.
