A traditional East Asian religious painting depicting Memyō Bosatsu mounted on a horse, rendered in ink and mineral pigments on silk.
This work depicts Memyō Bosatsu, known in Sanskrit as Ashvaghosha, a figure of significant status within Buddhist tradition. The composition follows the conventions of East Asian religious painting, where the subject is presented in a formal, iconic manner against a muted, dark background. The figure is shown mounted upon a horse, a detail that aligns with the iconography associated with this deity, who is often linked to the transmission of Buddhist teachings.
The figure holds a red orb in one hand and a small scale in the other, symbols that suggest a role in judgement or the balancing of karmic merit. The horse is rendered with careful attention to its harness and decorative trappings, which are adorned with gold-toned elements. The artist employs a refined line quality, particularly in the rendering of the facial features and the delicate folds of the robes. The colour palette is restrained, relying on deep teals, muted reds, and earthy tones to maintain a sense of solemnity appropriate for a devotional image.
Such paintings were typically produced for use in temples or private shrines, intended to facilitate meditation or ritual practice. The silk support, while showing signs of age, provides a smooth surface that allows for the precise application of mineral pigments. The overall arrangement is flat, prioritising symbolic clarity over the illusion of three-dimensional space. This approach is characteristic of traditional East Asian religious art, where the focus remains on the spiritual presence of the deity rather than the physical environment. The work offers a glimpse into the visual language of historical Buddhist practice, where every element, from the posture of the horse to the specific objects held by the Bodhisattva, carries a precise theological meaning.
