Along with his brother Annibale Carracci and cousin Ludovico Carracci, he was one of the founders of the Accademia degli Incamminati, an art academy that promoted a style distinct from late Mannerism. The Carracci brothers sought to revive classical principles in their work. Agostino was celebrated for his reproductive engravings, which circulated the inventions of other artists, and for his own compositions. In this print, Mercury, identifiable by his winged helmet and caduceus, is shown with the Three Graces, goddesses of charm, beauty, and creativity. The figures are rendered with careful attention to anatomy and musculature, characteristic of the Mannerist style. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged in a harmonious grouping against a backdrop of trees and foliage.
