A fresco by Agnolo Bronzino, 'The Israelites crossing the Red Sea' depicts the biblical scene with Mannerist elegance and stylisation. The composition is complex, with intertwined figures rendered in soft tones of blues, pinks, and browns.
Agnolo Bronzino, an Italian Mannerist painter from Florence, created this fresco depicting the biblical scene of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. Bronzino, also known as Agnolo di Cosimo, was a court painter for the Medici family, and his style is characterised by its elegance, technical skill, and often complex allegorical content. He trained with Pontormo, another leading Mannerist artist. Mannerism, which emerged in the High Renaissance, moved away from the naturalism and balance of earlier Renaissance art, instead embracing exaggeration, stylisation, and artificiality. Bronzino's portraits are particularly celebrated for their refined detail and cool detachment. The fresco presents a crowded scene of figures in various states of disarray as they traverse the Red Sea. The composition is complex, with numerous figures intertwined and overlapping, creating a sense of dynamic movement. The figures are rendered with a high degree of anatomical precision, typical of Bronzino's style, and their poses are often elegant and stylised. The colour palette is muted, with soft tones of blues, pinks, and browns dominating the scene. The background shows the receding waters and the pursuing Egyptian army, adding to the drama of the event. The overall effect is one of controlled chaos, typical of Mannerist art.
