A classical Baroque painting by Domenichino depicting the mythological scene of Mercury stealing the herds of Admetus within a serene, atmospheric setting.
This work by Domenico Zampieri, known as Domenichino, depicts a scene from classical mythology. The narrative concerns the god Mercury, who stole the cattle belonging to Admetus while Apollo tended them. Domenichino places the figures within a structured, atmospheric setting that reflects the influence of Annibale Carracci and the Bolognese school. The composition is organised around a large, central tree that divides the pictorial space, creating a sense of depth through receding planes of foliage and distant hills.
The figure of Mercury is positioned in the foreground, seated and playing a pipe, a detail that draws from the Ovidian account of the myth. The cattle are visible to the right, partially obscured by the natural surroundings. Domenichino employs a muted palette, favouring earthy tones of ochre, sage, and brown to establish a sense of antiquity and calm. The light is soft, diffusing across the horizon and suggesting the early hours of the day.
Unlike the more dramatic works of the later Baroque period, this painting maintains a sense of balance and restraint. The architecture in the distance, including a small tower, provides a human element to the vast, open terrain. The brushwork is precise, focusing on the textures of the bark, the softness of the grass, and the subtle modelling of the human form. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to integrate mythological subjects into a naturalistic framework, a hallmark of his contribution to seventeenth-century Italian art. The work remains a fine example of the idealised, classical approach to painting that defined the period in Rome.
