A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting the mythological tale of Pan and Syrinx as recounted by Mercury.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, specifically the narrative of Pan and Syrinx. Bonasone, an Italian engraver and painter active in Bologna, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of varied hatching and cross-hatching to define form and depth. The composition is arranged across a wide, open space, with the figures gathered in the foreground and a distant, classical architectural setting in the background.
On the right, Mercury is shown gesturing as he recounts the myth to an audience of nymphs and putti. To the left, the satyr Pan is depicted interacting with Syrinx, capturing the moment of pursuit that precedes her transformation into reeds. The figures are rendered with the anatomical focus typical of the period, reflecting the influence of contemporary Roman classicism. The background includes rolling hills, trees, and structures that suggest an idealised, antique environment. Bonasone's work often involved the reproduction of designs by other masters, yet his own hand is evident in the specific treatment of the foliage and the rhythmic placement of the figures across the pictorial plane.
The print is a fine example of sixteenth-century Italian printmaking, where the medium was used to disseminate classical themes to a wider audience. The clarity of the line work allows for a detailed reading of the narrative, from the central storytelling group to the secondary action occurring on the left. The balance between the human and mythological elements creates a cohesive scene that adheres to the aesthetic conventions of the Italian Renaissance.
