Metamorphosis III is a monumental woodcut by M.C. Escher, measuring nearly seven metres in length. It represents the culmination of his exploration into mathematical tiling and the transformation of forms. The composition functions as a continuous narrative, where one shape gradually morphs into another through a series of geometric shifts.

The work begins with the word 'METAMORPHOSE', which dissolves into a grid of black and white squares. These squares evolve into complex tessellations featuring insects, bees, and birds. As the eye travels across the print, the figures transition into aquatic life, then into horses, and eventually into architectural forms. The sequence concludes by returning to the original grid pattern, creating a cyclical visual experience.

Escher utilised a restricted palette of black, white, and muted green to maintain clarity throughout the complex transitions. Each stage of the transformation relies on precise geometric logic, where the negative space of one figure becomes the positive form of the next.
