A hand-coloured engraving by Maria Sibylla Merian, from "Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium", depicting insects and plants from Suriname with scientific precision and artistic skill.
Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a German-Swiss naturalist and scientific illustrator. She was one of the first naturalists to observe insects directly. Merian's meticulous observations and documentation of insect metamorphosis were exceptional for her time. She is best known for her expedition to Suriname in 1699, where she studied and illustrated the life cycles of tropical insects. Her work contributed significantly to the fields of entomology and botany. This print from "Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium" depicts various insects and plants from Suriname. A large blue butterfly dominates the upper portion of the image, its wings displaying a gradient of blues and browns. Below, a moth with intricate patterns resembling eyespots rests on a branch. A red caterpillar crawls along a leaf, near a cluster of red flowers. The composition is both scientifically precise and aesthetically pleasing, reflecting Merian's skill as both a naturalist and an artist. The hand-colouring adds depth and realism to the illustration, capturing the textures and colours of the natural specimens.
