A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, depicting figures in traditional dress with elegant line work and a restrained colour palette.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu represents a middle panel from a triptych titled Beauties of Three Capitals. Masanobu was a central figure in the development of Ukiyo-e, known for his technical innovations and his role in establishing the genre of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. His work often bridged the gap between early, monochrome prints and the later, full-colour developments of the mid-eighteenth century.
The composition features two figures rendered with the characteristic elegance of the period. The standing woman wears a kimono decorated with geometric patterns and cloud motifs, while a smaller figure, perhaps an attendant or younger woman, is positioned slightly behind her. The artist employs a balanced use of line and negative space, typical of the Edo period aesthetic. The colour palette is restrained, relying on yellow and black ink against the natural tone of the paper, which provides a sense of harmony and focus on the linear qualities of the garments.
Masanobu was not only an artist but also a publisher, which allowed him to experiment with print formats and techniques. This piece reflects his interest in the fashion and social customs of the urban classes in Edo. The figures are depicted with a sense of poise, their postures suggesting a narrative context common to the theatrical and social scenes of the time. The print demonstrates the technical precision required for early multi-block printing, where registration and ink application were managed with great care. By focusing on the interplay of pattern and form, Masanobu captures the essence of the Ukiyo-e style, which sought to document the fleeting pleasures of the floating world.
