Description
Middleham in North Yorkshire is dominated by its medieval castle, where broken stone towers rise above close-set houses and the green fields of Wensleydale extend towards the distant hills.
The castle at Middleham was a home of Richard III and remains a major landmark in Wensleydale. Its immense Norman keep was surrounded by luxurious chambers built for the Neville family, combining defensive strength with the comforts of a high-status medieval residence.
Broken pale walls and a tall roofless tower occupy the left foreground. Pointed openings reveal shadowed interiors, with smaller stone houses gathered immediately beyond the castle boundary. Green fields and lines of trees continue across the distance towards blue uplands. Full foliage suggests summer, and clear light catches the warm masonry beneath cream clouds and an open blue sky.
