A late-period work by Barnett Newman, featuring a deep blue field bisected by a precise vertical zip, characteristic of his Color Field style.
Midnight Blue, completed in 1970, represents the final phase of Barnett Newman's career. As a central figure in the New York School, Newman moved away from the gestural brushwork typical of his contemporaries, opting instead for large, monochromatic fields of colour. This work features a deep, expansive blue surface, interrupted by his signature vertical element, known as a zip. The zip functions here as a structural device, dividing the space and creating a sense of scale that engages the viewer directly.
Newman intended his paintings to be experienced in a physical sense, where the size of the canvas and the intensity of the colour field create an immersive environment. The blue hue is applied with a flat, even consistency, removing evidence of the artist's hand. By stripping away representational imagery, Newman focused on the relationship between the viewer and the object. The vertical line acts as a counterpoint to the vastness of the blue, providing a sense of orientation within the void. This approach reflects his interest in the sublime, where the viewer is confronted with the sheer presence of the work itself.
In this piece, the contrast between the dark, saturated blue and the precise vertical line demonstrates Newman's mastery of spatial tension. The composition is minimal, yet it carries a heavy visual weight. The work invites quiet observation, encouraging the viewer to consider the interaction of colour and line without the distraction of narrative or symbolic content. It remains a clear example of his late-period aesthetic, where simplicity and scale are used to command the viewer's attention.
