A atmospheric woodblock print by Itō Shinsui depicting the temple of Mii-dera during a heavy rainstorm, rendered in cool tones.
This woodblock print by Itō Shinsui depicts the temple of Mii-dera during a heavy downpour. As a practitioner of the Shin-hanga movement, Shinsui revitalised traditional Japanese printmaking by incorporating Western techniques of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective. The series, Eight Views of Lake Biwa, draws upon a classical theme in Japanese art, yet Shinsui interprets the subject through a modern lens.
The composition focuses on the temple architecture, which is partially obscured by the relentless vertical lines of rain. These lines are carved with precision, creating a sense of movement and density that defines the mood of the scene. The colour palette is restricted to cool blues, greys, and deep greens, which effectively convey the damp, quiet atmosphere of a storm. The silhouette of the pine tree in the foreground provides a dark contrast against the lighter, rain-streaked sky, adding depth to the image.
Shinsui was a student of Kaburagi Kiyokata and became known for his ability to capture transient moments in nature. In this work, the technical execution of the woodblock carving allows for the subtle gradation of colour, a hallmark of the Shin-hanga style. The print avoids excessive detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the architectural structure and the natural elements. By choosing to depict the temple in such weather, the artist shifts the focus from the building itself to the sensory experience of the environment. This print is an example of the technical skill required to produce atmospheric effects using traditional woodblock methods, demonstrating the precision of the carvers and printers who collaborated with Shinsui to realise his vision.
