A detailed illustration of the legendary Russian ploughman Mikula Selyaninovich, rendered in ink and wash by Andrei Ryabushkin.
Andrei Ryabushkin, a painter associated with the Russian Revival movement, produced this illustration for the collection 'Russian Epic Heroes'. The work depicts Mikula Selyaninovich, a legendary ploughman from the Russian byliny (epic poems). In the folklore tradition, Mikula possesses immense strength, which he derives from his connection to the earth and his labour. Ryabushkin captures the figure in a moment of quiet dignity, standing before his wooden plough in an expansive field. A horse grazes in the background, reinforcing the rural setting and the humble nature of the hero.
Ryabushkin employs a monochromatic palette, using ink and wash to define the textures of the peasant clothing and the surrounding soil. The line work is precise, focusing on the physical presence of the ploughman. His gaze is directed away from the viewer, suggesting a preoccupation with his work or a contemplation of the land. The composition balances the foreground figure with the receding horizon, creating a sense of scale that reflects the epic nature of the subject matter. Unlike the grand, heroic depictions found in later Soviet realism, Ryabushkin presents the character with a focus on historical authenticity and folk tradition. The artist was known for his interest in pre-Petrine Russia, and this piece reflects his study of historical costume and rural life. The simplicity of the medium allows the viewer to focus on the characterisation of the ploughman, who remains a symbol of the strength of the Russian peasantry in the oral tradition.
