A geometric abstraction by Max Bill, this 1965 composition explores the relationship between colour and form through precise, mathematical arrangement.
Milde Zonen (1965) is a representative work by the Swiss artist, architect, and designer Max Bill. As a leading figure in the Concrete Art movement, Bill sought to create art based on mathematical principles rather than subjective expression. This piece demonstrates his interest in the relationship between colour, form, and spatial organisation.
The composition is structured within a diamond format, a shape Bill frequently employed to disrupt traditional rectangular viewing habits. A central square serves as the primary anchor, flanked by triangular segments that create a sense of balanced tension. The colour palette is deliberate, utilising soft, muted tones that interact to define the boundaries of each geometric plane. By avoiding representational imagery, Bill invites the viewer to engage directly with the physical properties of the canvas and the logic of the arrangement.
Bill studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he absorbed the school's focus on functionalism and the integration of art with industrial design. His work often reflects this background, prioritising clarity and precision. In Milde Zonen, the absence of brushwork or gestural marks reinforces the objective nature of the composition. The work functions as a study in visual equilibrium, where the proportions of the shapes and the selection of hues are calculated to produce a harmonious effect. This approach to painting aligns with the broader goals of the Concrete Art movement, which aimed to produce objects that were autonomous and self-referential. The print captures the flat, matte application of paint characteristic of Bill's original oil works, ensuring the geometric integrity of the design remains clear and precise.
