A historical scene by Alexandre Benois shows a military parade in front of the Mikhailovsky Castle in Saint Petersburg, rendered in watercolour and gouache with muted tones and careful attention to detail.
This watercolour and gouache work by Alexandre Benois (1870-1960) depicts a military parade taking place in front of the Mikhailovsky Castle in Saint Petersburg. Benois was a Russian artist, art critic, historian, and stage designer who belonged to the Mir iskusstva movement, which sought to promote Russian art and culture. He was also a member of the Ballets Russes, for which he designed sets and costumes. The artwork shows Emperor Paul I's troops drilling in the snow-covered square before the castle. The scene is rendered in muted tones, with the grey stone of the castle contrasting against the white snow and the dark uniforms of the soldiers. The sky is overcast, and snow falls heavily, adding to the wintry atmosphere. Benois's style is characterised by its attention to historical detail and its ability to capture the atmosphere of a particular time and place. This piece reflects his interest in Russian history and his skill as a draughtsman and colourist.
