A detailed Victorian oil colour print by George Baxter, depicting the legendary Greek athlete Milo of Crotona.
This print depicts the classical Greek athlete Milo of Crotona, a figure from antiquity known for his immense physical strength. The composition shows Milo attempting to split a tree trunk with his bare hands, a legendary feat that ultimately led to his demise when his hands became trapped in the wood. The image is a characteristic example of the Baxter process, a method of colour printing that utilised multiple wood blocks to build up layers of oil-based ink. This technique allowed for a level of chromatic detail and tonal variation that was difficult to achieve with traditional hand-coloured engravings of the period.
The print is based on an original painting by G. F. Sargeant. It demonstrates the technical precision for which George Baxter became known during the mid-nineteenth century. The figure of Milo is rendered with a focus on anatomical definition, reflecting the influence of Neoclassical art on Victorian visual culture. The surrounding foliage is executed with fine lines, providing a sense of depth to the woodland setting. The text at the base of the print identifies the printer and the original painter, which was a common practice for Baxter to authenticate his patented process. This work serves as a record of the commercial printing methods that made high-quality imagery accessible to a wider audience in Britain during the Victorian era. The print retains the original margins and typography, offering a clear view of the production standards of the Charterhouse Square workshop.
