A classic still life by Moïse Kisling, featuring a dense, bright bouquet of mimosas and white lilies set against a muted interior background.
Moïse Kisling, a central figure of the School of Paris, is recognised for his distinct approach to portraiture and still life painting. In this composition, he presents a dense arrangement of mimosas and white lilies contained within a dark, speckled vase. The work displays the artist's characteristic precision and his ability to balance form with a controlled, yet expressive, application of paint.
The floral subject occupies the majority of the frame, creating a sense of fullness that pushes against the boundaries of the canvas. Kisling employs a clear, deliberate technique, ensuring each petal and cluster of mimosa blossoms maintains its individual shape. The contrast between the bright, yellow mimosa clusters and the stark white lilies provides a visual tension that is typical of his mid-career output. The background is divided into vertical planes of muted blue and green, suggesting an interior setting while keeping the focus firmly on the botanical subject.
Kisling moved to Paris in 1910, where he became associated with the Montparnasse circle of artists, including Amedeo Modigliani and Marc Chagall. His work often avoids the extreme abstraction of his contemporaries, opting instead for a synthesis of traditional structure and modern colour sensibility. This piece demonstrates his technical discipline, particularly in the rendering of the vase and the way the light interacts with the varied textures of the flowers. The composition is balanced and orderly, reflecting the artist's preference for clarity over ambiguity. By isolating the bouquet against a simple backdrop, Kisling invites the viewer to observe the specific qualities of the flora, from the delicate, granular texture of the mimosa to the smooth, trumpet-like forms of the lilies.
