This ink wash painting by Kiyohara Yukinobu depicts a scene from the Heike Monogatari, a classic of Japanese literature. The narrative concerns the musician Minamoto no Nakakuni, who is sent by the Emperor to locate Lady Kogō, a court lady living in seclusion. The composition relies on the atmospheric technique of ink wash, where varying concentrations of ink create depth and distance. The mountains emerge from a dense mist, while the winding river in the foreground provides a sense of movement and direction.
Kiyohara Yukinobu was a member of the Kusumi family, which was closely associated with the Kano school of painters. Her work reflects the technical training typical of this lineage, yet it maintains a distinct sensitivity to mood and narrative. The use of negative space is intentional, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the solid forms of the mountains and the ethereal quality of the fog. The monochromatic palette emphasises the texture of the silk support, creating a quiet, contemplative atmosphere.
