A dramatic woodblock print by Kuwagata Keisai depicting the legendary confrontation between Minamoto Yoshitsune, Benkei, and the ghost of Taira no Tomomori.
This woodblock print by Kuwagata Keisai depicts a dramatic scene from Japanese folklore, specifically the legend of the Battle of Dan-no-ura. The composition captures the warrior Minamoto Yoshitsune and his loyal retainer, the warrior-monk Benkei, as they confront the vengeful ghost of Taira no Tomomori amidst a turbulent sea. The print belongs to the musha-e genre, which focuses on depictions of historical warriors and legendary figures.
Keisai employs a dynamic arrangement to convey the intensity of the encounter. The ghost of Tomomori appears as a spectral, floating figure above the boat, while Yoshitsune and Benkei react with focused determination. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to define the armour and the facial expressions of the figures, contrasting with the more fluid, stylised rendering of the crashing waves and the driving rain. The dark, atmospheric sky is achieved through careful block printing, creating a sense of foreboding that permeates the scene.
Kuwagata Keisai, also known as Kitao Masayoshi, was a versatile artist who transitioned from the traditional ukiyo-e style to a more simplified, expressive approach. His work often reflects a keen observation of movement and posture. This print demonstrates his ability to balance narrative clarity with the aesthetic conventions of the period. The use of a limited colour palette, typical of the era, directs the viewer's attention to the interplay between the human figures and the supernatural presence. The print serves as a visual record of a popular tale, illustrating the cultural fascination with the Taira and Minamoto conflict that persisted long after the historical events concluded. The attention to detail in the weaponry and clothing provides insight into the period's artistic interpretation of historical martial culture.
