An allegorical etching by Abraham Delfos depicting Minerva overseeing putti as they work in a field, accompanied by the Latin motto 'SPE UNITI'.
This etching by the Dutch artist Abraham Delfos presents an allegorical scene featuring the Roman goddess Minerva observing a group of putti engaged in agricultural labour. Minerva, identified by her helmet and shield, stands to the left, overseeing the activity. The putti are depicted using various tools, such as rakes and spades, to cultivate the earth. A banner at the base of the composition bears the Latin inscription 'SPE UNITI', which translates to 'United in Hope'.
The work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in classical motifs and allegorical storytelling. Delfos employs a precise etching technique, using fine lines to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The composition is balanced, with the goddess providing a vertical anchor on the left, while the putti are distributed across the field in the foreground and mid-ground. The background features a gentle, hilly terrain, rendered with lighter strokes to suggest distance.
This print is characteristic of the period's preference for didactic imagery, where mythological figures are placed in domestic or rural settings to convey moral or philosophical concepts. The inclusion of the putti, often used to represent innocence or industry, adds a playful yet structured element to the scene. The work demonstrates the technical skill of Delfos, who was active in the Netherlands during a period of transition in printmaking styles. The clear, controlled lines and the focus on narrative clarity are typical of the era's approach to graphic arts, where the aim was to communicate a specific message through a harmonious arrangement of classical elements.
