This work by Zeng Yandong (1751-1827) exemplifies the minimalist approach of the Qing Dynasty literati tradition. Zeng Yandong, a scholar-official known for his eccentric and individualistic style, often utilised such small-scale formats to capture fleeting observations or poetic sentiments. The figure is depicted using soft, blurred ink washes that suggest movement and form without relying on rigid outlines. The donkey is similarly suggested through simple, dark ink strokes that contrast with the lighter, more diffuse treatment of the rider.

To the left of the figure, a column of calligraphy provides context, balancing the visual weight of the image. The integration of text and image is a hallmark of Chinese painting, where the brushwork of the characters shares the same aesthetic lineage as the pictorial elements. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, off-white tone that provides a neutral ground for the monochrome ink.
