A detailed watercolour study of a bullfrog, sunfish, and water lily in an Adirondack pond, painted by Winslow Homer in 1891.
Winslow Homer produced this watercolour in 1891 during his time in the Adirondack Mountains. The work captures a quiet moment within a pond, focusing on the interaction between aquatic life and the surrounding flora. A sunfish swims near a white water lily, while a bullfrog rests upon a lily pad to the right. The composition relies on a dark, moody palette that suggests the depth of the water and the shadows cast by overhanging vegetation.
Homer employed a technique that balances precise observation with fluid application of pigment. The contrast between the luminous white petals of the lily and the murky, dark tones of the water creates a sense of stillness. Unlike his earlier, more narrative works, this piece functions as a direct study of natural phenomena. The artist avoids unnecessary detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the specific textures of the frog skin, the scales of the fish, and the translucent quality of the lily petals.
This watercolour demonstrates the technical proficiency Homer achieved in the medium during the latter part of his career. He often visited the Adirondacks to escape the pressures of urban life, finding subject matter in the wilderness. The work remains a clear example of his ability to translate the atmosphere of a specific location onto paper. By limiting the colour range to deep browns, greens, and muted greys, he directs attention to the subtle play of light on the water surface. The signature and date are visible in the lower right corner, placed directly into the composition. This piece provides a view into the artist's private observations of the natural world, stripped of human presence and focused entirely on the inhabitants of the pond.
